The magazine landscape is full of experienced and well-established personalities. As such, is there room for a 22-year-old engineer-entrepreneur with no solid background in this field? I do hope all of you out there say “Yes” to this as I launch my first issue of my magazine, CampusJosh, which is very dear to my heart.
Being an engineer, I had several career avenues open before me, but I wanted to do something that pumps my adrenaline each day. Can engineering ever give me such a high? Can computers give me the pleasure of seeing my writing on the Net or in someone’s hands as he or she reads my thoughts, my vision and my experiences? Can being a techie make me part of a young person’s life as he or she turns to my magazine to prepare him or herself before entering corporate life?
For these and many more reasons, I set aside my engineering life for an adventure-filled one of journalism and publishing.
Why launch a magazine? Much as we may all think that Generation X is ready years before they enter corporate life, nothing could be further from the truth. Perhaps you don’t know some shocking facts that hit me like a thunderbolt. One of them is:
• That some engineering students from Ananthapur have never used the Net and are unaware of the latest technologies.
To fill this lacuna, I conceived of the idea of publishing a A4 xerox sheet of news each week with tech updates in my college, which would be moderately priced at Re. 1. After much deliberation, I thought that perhaps a five-pager would be better. It would contain information about the three technologies—computers, electronics and mechanical.
A thirst for knowledge is not enough, I thought. Students should give back to society a little of what it has given them. This led to the formation of Something 4 Society, an institution that deals with feeding the poor.
Turning a negative environment into a positive one
The economic slowdown of 2009 brought its own sad story. But not for me. Instead of picking up a job that came my way, I decided to start a magazine for students and employ those who needed a job.
My father awakened the sleeping giant—the entrepreneur—in me. With his encouragement, I converted an idea into reality. I now invite you to read my magazine, CampusJosh and encourage teenagers to get the best out of it. My journey of a thousand miles has only just begun. I look forward to your encouragement and participation in my quest for success.
